Heather Christian's "Animal Wisdom" is a profound theatrical work that intertwines spiritual autobiography with musical performance, drawing deep from the Mississippi delta's haunted brackish waters. The show, originally conceived by Christian and now often performed by Kenita Miller, is described as a requiem mass and folk-blues concert.

Christian explains the title metaphorically, likening her own expansive and sensitive mind to a "wrecking ball." The performance frames itself as a seance, structured like Catholic liturgy, where the central figure, H, communicates with and through ancestors. This ritualistic exploration is both ardent and anguished, Christian and pagan.

The production features evocative staging by director Keenan Tyler Oliphant and lighting designer Masha Tsimring. Scenic designer Emmie Finckel creates an atmosphere reminiscent of a bayou junk shop, with elements like mossy greenery, paper flowers, and suspended tea cups, all under a conjured electric storm.

The concept of "animal wisdom" is explored through H's belief that ancestors persist in nature – in birds, ferns, cicadas, and even skunks. These ancestral presences, while sometimes appearing in nightmares as a destructive lion, ultimately guide H not to fear the dark.
