Andy Serkis' long-anticipated animated version of George Orwell's "Animal Farm" is slated for a May 1, 2026 release in the United States, acquired by the studio Angel. The film recently debuted at the Annecy International Film Festival. Its notable voice cast includes a wide array of talent such as Seth Rogen, Gaten Matarazzo, Kieran Culkin, Glenn Close, and Steve Buscemi.
Serkis, who initially considered a performance capture approach, shifted to animation to achieve a more accessible and innocent tone. He explained that a live-action format would have resulted in a bleaker film, whereas animation allows for greater creative freedom and emotional connection without being bound by strict reality.
Production on the adaptation began in 2022, with Serkis directing and producing through Imaginarium Studios. This project represents a significant directorial effort for Serkis, aiming to bring Orwell's classic tale to a new generation with a unique animated sensibility.
