Angelika Saleh, the woman whose name graces a prominent New York independent cinema, passed away on February 12th at her Manhattan home. She was 90 years old.
Born Angelika Maria Ohl in Munich in 1935, her life's journey included a stint as a Pan Am stewardess after leaving post-war Germany. She later moved to New York, married Joseph Saleh, and together they became influential figures in the city's cultural landscape.
The Salehs initially ventured into film production, with Joseph as executive producer for "Savages" and Angelika for the Oscar-nominated documentary "Streetwise." Their shared passion for independent cinema and observations on distribution challenges led them to establish the Angelika Film Center in September 1989.
Located in Manhattan's Cable Building, the Angelika aimed to create a space for discerning film lovers, featuring special-interest domestic and foreign films. The venue was noted for its innovative approach, including offering quality food and a unique ambiance, even accommodating the rumble of the subway.
The Angelika played a significant role in launching the careers of filmmakers like Kevin Smith and featured early works from directors such as Richard Linklater, Whit Stillman, and Larry Clark. Saleh focused on programming that left a lasting impact on independent film.
Angelika and Joseph Saleh divorced in 1996, after which they sold the theater. The original Angelika Film Center continues to be a cultural hub, with multiple locations now operating across the United States and Australia.
Ms. Saleh is survived by her two daughters, a granddaughter, a great-granddaughter, and a sister. Her husband, Joseph, died in 2007.
