Filmmaker Andrew Stanton, known for Pixar's "WALL*E" and "Finding Nemo," has returned to live-action directing after a 14-year absence with "In the Blink of an Eye," now available on Hulu. This ambitious film features three interwoven narratives, spanning from prehistoric times to a futuristic space mission.
Stanton explained his lengthy break was filled with directing television episodes, including for "Stranger Things" and "Better Call Saul," as he pursued live-action projects. He was attached to several potential films, such as "Revolver" and "Chairman Spaceman," before committing to "In the Blink of an Eye."
He revealed his recent goal to create more frequently, stating, "I just want to work." Coincidentally, Stanton also directed "Toy Story 5," which is slated for release this June, making 2026 a notable year for him. He described this dual release as a "wonderful present" and anticipates a break before becoming busy again in 2027.
Stanton was drawn to "In the Blink of an Eye" for its complexity and unconventional structure, comparing it to an aria. He sought the creative challenge that had been missing in his work. The film's production with Searchlight Pictures, known for its niche content, allowed Stanton creative freedom.
Despite mixed reviews for "In the Blink of an Eye," the trailer for "Toy Story 5" received overwhelmingly positive reception. Stanton expressed satisfaction with both projects and his ongoing relationship with Pixar, where he will continue to offer creative advice.
