An ancient artifact, a horned pony cap recovered from a bog in southern Scotland more than 200 years ago, is now a star attraction at an exhibition in the United States. This headwear, estimated to be over 2,000 years old, was discovered in 1812 near Castle Douglas. It is part of the "Celtic Art Across the Ages" exhibition that recently opened at Harvard Art Museums in Massachusetts.
Curators suggest the cap would have given ponies the appearance of "mythical beasts," transforming them into "status animals" possibly used to pull chariots. The artifact's authenticity was debated for years, but a discovered newspaper account confirmed the horns and cap were attached when found. The exhibition also features other significant Celtic artifacts from various regions of Scotland, spanning nearly a millennium of history.
