"Ana, en Passant," the debut feature from Fernanda Salgado, is making its global debut with premieres at the Brasília Brazilian Film Festival and the Vancouver Film Festival (VIFF). VIFF marks a historic moment as the film is the first animated feature to compete in its Vanguard program.
The narrative centers on Ana, a young Black French woman, who travels to Belo Horizonte after her grandmother's passing. In her grandmother's former apartment, she encounters Alice, her doppelganger, initiating a profound exploration of memory, ancestral ties, and self-discovery.
Employing a unique blend of rotoscoping, hand-drawn 2D animation, collage, and stop motion, "Ana, en Passant" crafts a visually textured world. The film navigates themes of grief, migration, Black identity, and the invisible connections binding women across generations, moving between Paris and Belo Horizonte.
This ambitious co-production involves Apiario Creative Studio (Brazil), Sardinha em Lata (Portugal), and Midralgar (France). The film's international strategy will be guided by Miyu Distribution, which has acquired its international rights.
