The enduring popularity of Indian cinema, particularly the charisma of superstar Amitabh Bachchan, continues to hold sway in Palestine and Gaza. Abdullah M A Abushawesh, the Ambassador of the State of Palestine to India, recently shared insights into this strong cultural connection. Speaking at the NDTV World Summit 2026, Mr. Abushawesh recounted a personal anecdote illustrating Bollywood's reach.
He revealed that prior to his departure for India, the very first messages of congratulation he received from his friends and family located in Gaza were not related to political or diplomatic matters. Instead, these initial communications centered on one of India's most prominent and celebrated film personalities. This emphasis underscores how deeply Indian films and their stars are embedded in the cultural fabric of the Palestinian territories.
