Amateur Actors Shine with Royal Shakespeare Company
28 Feb
Summary
- Local actors performed alongside the Royal Shakespeare Company.
- The project aims to make Shakespeare's work more accessible.
- Community performers gained confidence and new opportunities.

Amateur actors from Cornwall recently experienced the unique opportunity to perform alongside the renowned Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC). As the RSC's production of Hamlet visited the Hall for Cornwall, local theatre groups, including Shakespeare Nation, presented their own Hamlet-inspired extracts as "curtain-raising" performances.
The initiative, a collaboration between Hall for Cornwall and the RSC, is part of a national effort to broaden access to Shakespeare's plays. Participants ranged in age from 18 to 80, creating a vibrant community of diverse experience levels.
This project has provided a significant confidence boost for community actors, with some, like Alison Dures, inspired to start their own acting ventures. The Hall for Cornwall's chief executive highlighted that the partnership, spanning over a decade, aims to foster identity and provide aspiring performers with a tangible link to the professional stage.
The RSC's production of Hamlet, directed by Rupert Goold, opened its national tour in Truro before continuing its journey across England.
