International sales company Parallax Films has acquired worldwide distribution rights for "Aman," a short film by writer-director Rahul Roye. The film's narrative follows a trans man who learns of an unexpected pregnancy on the eve of his gender-affirming surgery. "Aman" is scheduled for its world premiere in the Short Cuts competition at the Toronto Film Festival. Following this, it will screen at the BFI London Film Festival for its European premiere, competing in the festival's shorts section.
The 16-minute film is a co-production between the U.K., U.S., India, and France, filmed in Hindi and Bengali. Roye described the film as an exploration of bodies and identities that resist simple definitions, questioning societal gender constructs by centering a trans man's experience with pregnancy. The film aims to be a story about "becoming," delving into the profound personal and societal implications of gender and life-altering biological events.
Supported by various arts foundations and grants, "Aman" features transgender activist Kabir Maan in his acting debut as the titular character. The film's producers emphasized Parallax Films' expertise and sensitive approach to representing the film's intimate and layered narrative to a global audience. This partnership aims to position the film effectively while preserving its unique essence.
