Summary
- Alvvays blends pristine pop with lo-fi distortion.
- The band's name reflects themes of commitment and abandonment.
- Molly Rankin evolved from solo folk artist to indie-pop frontwoman.
Toronto-based indie-pop band Alvvays has released a debut that artfully juxtaposes polished pop sensibilities with a deliberately blown-out, distorted sound. This sonic approach mirrors the album's lyrical preoccupations with themes of commitment, abandonment, nostalgia, and uncertainty, effectively captured by the band's name.
Formed by Molly Rankin, who previously navigated the solo folk scene as a descendant of the Rankin Family, the quintet represents a significant shift. Originally releasing music under her own name, Rankin's partnership with guitarist Alec O'Hanley proved pivotal.
With the addition of Kerri MacLellan, Brian Murphy, and Phil MacIssac, the group relocated to Toronto. They adopted the new moniker Alvvays, signifying a fresh aesthetic and a departure from their previous musical paths.
