A new animated musical, "Alishan Escape: A Mandopop Ghost Adventure," is being developed by Australian studio Red Empire Productions and Organic Media Group. The film draws inspiration from Taiwan's Ghost Month traditions, Buddhist philosophy, Indigenous cultures, and the global appeal of Asian pop music.
The narrative centers on an international pop star who journeys to Taiwan to complete a song left unfinished by her deceased parents. During the Ghost Month period, she finds herself crossing into the realm of the dead. To return to the living before her concert, she must find her voice and finish the song, weaving together Mandopop, mythology, comedy, and supernatural adventure.
Creative leads Amie Casey of Red Empire Productions and Steve Chicorel of Organic Media Group are spearheading the project. Chicorel, who lived in Taiwan for nearly two decades, developed the story and music, aiming to celebrate the island's unique culture. The production will utilize a hybrid-AI approach, merging advanced technology with performances from real singers and actors to ensure emotional authenticity and visual ambition.
Animator Greg Manwaring, known for his work on "The Lion King" and "The Iron Giant," has joined the team. Feature treatments for a planned franchise have been developed, and discussions are underway with a major studio's animation division for further development.
