Alim Beisembayev, the 2021 Leeds International Piano Competition winner, recently graced the stage at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. His recital presented a compelling journey through the passionate surge of Romanticism, spanning composers from the 1820s to 1853.
Beisembayev's interpretation of Schubert's Moments Musicaux was understated, creating an intimate atmosphere that highlighted the composer's characteristic harmonic shifts. He then delved into Chopin's Fantaisie, Op49, revealing a strong affinity for the composer's melancholic melodies and intricate chromatic harmonies.
The second half featured Liszt's Sonata in B minor, a piece perceived to contain the 'Diabolus in Musica.' Beisembayev navigated its challenges with precision, moving from intense, virtuosic passages to moments of serene beauty.
His performance demonstrated not only technical assurance but also profound interpretative insights, further evidenced by a beautifully delivered Debussy encore that hinted at 20th-century sensibilities.
