Alain Gomis' sixth feature film, 'Dao,' makes its debut at the Berlin International Film Festival, presenting a narrative centered on perpetual circular movement.
The film unites professional and non-professional actors, portraying on-screen relatives celebrating a wedding in Paris and a funeral in Guinea-Bissau.
"Dao is a perpetual and circular movement which flows in everything and unites the world," states the film's definition.
Gomis, who founded the Yennenga Centre in Dakar, Senegal, in 2018, aimed to create a film that genuinely reflects its subjects, allowing them to share their stories and be seen authentically.
The creative process involved a blend of scripted scenes and improvisation, drawing inspiration from personal experiences like Gomis' father's funeral and a subsequent wedding.
'Dao' intricately weaves individual stories and shared heritage, intertwining love, laughter, ritual, pain, and history between France and Africa, culminating in a symbolic rebirth.
