Thirty-five years after the release of the 1990 comic-book film 'Dick Tracy', legendary actor Al Pacino is reflecting on his experience joining the cast. In a recent Q&A at the film's anniversary screening, Pacino shared the story of how director Warren Beatty had to do some serious convincing to get him on board.
Pacino, who played the role of gangster Big Boy Caprice in the film, recalled that Beatty was initially searching for the right actor to take on the part. "Warren was looking for an actor to play Big Boy. So he and I, he met me and we would talk and [he'd] say, 'I want to know what actors who could play this part,'" Pacino explained. It took Beatty several months of persistent persuasion before Pacino finally agreed to the role.
While the part was a departure from Pacino's famous dramatic roles, such as Michael Corleone in 'The Godfather', the 85-year-old actor saw it as a return to his comedic roots. "I was really born to play Big Boy. I started out as a comic," he shared, noting that his early days in New York City in the 1960s were filled with a vibrant theater scene and chance encounters with rising stars like Bob Dylan.
Pacino's performance in 'Dick Tracy' was widely praised, with the actor noting that the entire cast did an "amazing job." The film was accompanied by several acclaimed soundtracks, including Madonna's 'I'm Breathless' album, which the pop icon later called her "favorite record."
