Akshay Kumar Disagrees with Aamir Khan's 6-Month Streaming Delay
29 Sep, 2025
Summary
- Akshay Kumar advocates for 3-month gap between theatrical and OTT release
- Argues OTT platforms need to benefit from digital rights deals
- Acknowledges his own heavy OTT consumption to scout talent

As of September 29th, 2025, the ongoing debate over the ideal gap between theatrical releases and OTT premieres has found two of Bollywood's biggest stars on opposite ends. Aamir Khan recently advocated for a six-month window to protect the theatrical business, but Akshay Kumar has now voiced his disagreement, suggesting a shorter gap is more practical.
In a recent conversation, Akshay Kumar stressed that OTT platforms, which invest heavily in digital rights, also deserve fair treatment. He stated that according to him, a three-month gap is acceptable, as six months is too long. "At the end of the day, the OTT platform is paying you for the digital rights. They also need to benefit from the deal," he remarked.
The actor-producer added that the industry should return to the pre-pandemic model, where theatres and streaming platforms co-existed without friction. He acknowledged that while producers happily take money from OTT platforms for digital rights, they then "conveniently say our films aren't working because of OTT." Akshay admitted he consumes a significant amount of OTT content himself, not just for entertainment but also to scout talent for his own projects.
Akshay's comments come in the backdrop of Aamir Khan's evolving perspective on the theatrical-to-OTT window. The Laal Singh Chaddha star has long criticized the shrinking gap, blaming it for dwindling footfalls in cinemas. However, Akshay believes a more balanced approach, where both theatres and OTT platforms can thrive, is the way forward.
