A significant television adaptation of Charlotte Brontë's "Jane Eyre" is in development, with Aimee Lou Wood attached to star as the titular heroine. Wood, recognized for her Emmy-nominated role in "The White Lotus," will bring the iconic character to life. The series is being produced by Working Title, known for its acclaimed films, and the script is penned by Miriam Battye, a Writers Guild of America award winner for her work on "Succession."
Discussions are reportedly in advanced stages with a UK broadcaster to join the production. The coming-of-age novel, first published in 1927, explores themes of love, independence, and social equality, with the heroine's individualistic nature and the novel's progressive approach to class, sexuality, religion, and feminism making it relevant today.
This new adaptation follows numerous previous cinematic and television interpretations of the beloved novel. The last major TV version aired in 2006, with other notable adaptations including the 2011 film starring Mia Wasikowska and the 1996 film featuring Charlotte Gainsbourg. Wood is currently in post-production for the movie "Anxious People" and has been cast in Sam Mendes' upcoming Beatles films.
