Actor Eric Dane, who passed away in February at 53 after a battle with ALS, was involved in a significant AI voice restoration project shortly before his death. This initiative, facilitated by the AI firm ElevenLabs, aimed to help Dane communicate as his voice deteriorated due to the progressive neurological disease.
The technology used recordings provided by Dane to recreate the nuances of his speaking voice. Dane experienced the AI-generated voice before his passing, finding the moment deeply emotional, as did his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and their daughters, Billie and Georgia.
Gayheart shared that their daughters were thrilled, remarking that the AI voice was indistinguishable from their father's. The family found solace in having this digital legacy, though Dane wished they could have used it more extensively. ElevenLabs offers this service without charge to individuals with terminal neurological diseases affecting speech.
At the upcoming SXSW festival, ElevenLabs and Gayheart will host a panel titled "Hello Again: Restoring Voices with AI" to honor Dane's legacy. Gayheart plans to advocate for broader access to such technology, emphasizing its importance for communication between patients and their loved ones or caregivers.
