AI Novel Pulled Amidst Authorial Doubts
20 Mar
Summary
- Book release canceled due to allegations of AI-generated content.
- Author denies personal use of AI, blames hired assistant.
- Publisher committed to protecting original creative expression.

The US release of Mia Ballard's novel "Shy Girl" has been canceled, and its UK edition withdrawn, due to weeks of online speculation regarding its origins. Concerns were raised by readers on platforms like Goodreads and Reddit, who questioned whether sections of the text exhibited AI-generated characteristics. Hachette Book Group confirmed the halt of publication after an internal review. The book, originally self-published in February 2025 and later released in the UK in November 2025, had approximately 1,800 print copies sold there.
Ballard has denied personally employing AI to write the novel. She stated that an acquaintance she hired for an earlier, self-published version incorporated AI tools. The author expressed distress over the controversy, stating her mental health is at an all-time low and her reputation is ruined for actions she claims she did not personally commit. The publisher emphasized its commitment to protecting original creative expression and storytelling.
This situation highlights the growing challenges publishers face with AI-generated content. Last week, the Society of Authors introduced a logo to distinguish human-authored books from AI-generated works, a move mirrored by a similar initiative from the US Authors Guild in early 2025.
