A contentious AI-generated mural, recently affixed to the exterior of the Jolly Colliers pub in Bedminster, Bristol, has been removed. The artwork, a vinyl sticker, had been placed on the pub's wall earlier this week. It featured prominent symbols associated with Bristol, such as hot air balloons and the Clifton Suspension Bridge.
The mural's presence in Bedminster, an area known for hosting Europe's largest street art festival, Upfest, quickly drew criticism. A letter found taped to the building described the artwork as a "disrespectful affront" to the city's many creative individuals and accused the pub owners of "laziness." Local artists also reportedly characterized the piece as "careless and rushed."
Punch Pubs & Co, the owner of the Jolly Colliers, stated that the mural was a "temporary solution." The company indicated that they are collaborating with local artists to introduce a permanent replacement.
