AI Glasses Translate Live Theater for Global Audiences

Performances in South Korea and internationally are embracing artificial intelligence by distributing AI glasses to enhance accessibility for those who do not speak Korean. This innovative program aims to translate dialogue in real-time, allowing a broader audience to enjoy theatrical productions.

The initiative was partly funded by the Korea Tourism Organization through an agency called Smart Theater. A four-month pilot program was conducted to test the viability of AI glasses in live theater settings. Initial feedback from participants in the pilot has reportedly been positive.

The AI glasses utilized in this program are specifically designed without cameras, addressing privacy concerns and the standard practice of prohibiting recording during performances. This feature distinguishes them from other smart glasses that can capture video and photos.

While AI translation technology is advancing rapidly, the effectiveness of smart glasses for this purpose is still being evaluated. Alternative open-ear audio devices paired with apps are also being considered as potentially less intrusive options, especially for individuals who wear prescription glasses.

This development marks a significant step for AI glasses, as they are more frequently banned than adopted in public spaces. However, widespread personal use in theaters may not be imminent.
