On October 2nd, 2025, Italian filmmaker Andrea Iervolino announced the launch of FellinAI, an artificial intelligence-directed film project conceived to celebrate European cinema. The first feature from FellinAI, titled "The Sweet Idleness," imagines a world in which machines have eradicated 99% of jobs, leaving humans to a life of leisure.
Iervolino's announcement has sparked a debate within the filmmaking community. In a statement, Directors UK CEO Andy Harrower warned that while directors have always embraced new technology, "their vision is something that AI will never replace." He acknowledged the potential for AI to support certain elements of filmmaking, but cautioned that the use of AI in production remains limited due to unresolved copyright and licensing issues.
Iervolino, who has previously worked on projects like "Ferrari" and "To The Bone," touted FellinAI as a "new chapter in the history of cinema." However, he emphasized that the initiative is not designed to "replace traditional cinema," to which he said he remains committed. Iervolino's goal is to "unite human sensitivity with the creative power of artificial intelligence in order to tell stories that no one has ever imagined before."
