AI's Shadow: Producer Urges Storytelling Courage

Penny Chapman, a co-founder of Matchbox Pictures, has issued a stark warning to Australian screen producers, urging them to resist algorithmic trends and rediscover genuine storytelling courage. Speaking at the Screen Forever Conference on the Gold Coast, Chapman highlighted concerns surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) and its potential impact on the industry.

Chapman drew parallels between the current narrative landscape and societal issues, citing the failure of the Voice to Parliament referendum as an example of a story failing to connect. She also referenced discussions on AI, noting that while human imagination is considered inimitable by machines, the technology's potential to offer an escape from human interaction is a significant concern for the industry.

Reflecting on her own company, Matchbox Pictures, Chapman detailed its 18-year journey, which generated AUD$1.4 billion in production across 81 titles. She underscored the company's founding principles: prioritizing writers, nurturing emerging talent, and maintaining creative honesty. The company's run concluded earlier this year when Universal International Studios announced its closure, citing shifts in the production landscape.

Concluding her lecture, Chapman criticized the transactional nature of creator-commissioner relationships, which she argued often defers too heavily to platform metrics. She lauded shows like 'Bluey' for treating audiences as active participants. Chapman expressed optimism for Australia's creative future, stating that the nation is now 'awake' to its potential.
