The situation reportedly came to light in May 2024 when Lively emailed Affleck seeking advice amidst a legal battle with director Justin Baldoni. Affleck's decision to not engage is said to stem from a desire to protect his relationship with ex-wife Jennifer Garner.

An insider told the Daily Mail that Affleck's main concern was that any dialogue with Lively could become public, thereby dredging up painful memories for Garner. Affleck and Garner, who were married from 2005 to 2018, have worked to establish a strong co-parenting relationship and mutual support. He believed involving himself in Lively's current film entanglement would be detrimental to this hard-won peace.

The surfaced email, redacted but hinting at Affleck through references like "Jennifer" and a Dunkin' commercial, began with a familiar greeting. Lively expressed she had undergone a difficult experience on the film, hinting at "wild HR issues" with Baldoni. She then solicited advice and noted she would be honored if "Jennifer" [likely Lopez] were to watch the movie.

Reports suggest Affleck's response was minimal, at best. Another source indicated that Affleck did not deeply engage with the request. He anticipated questions about the matter following his press tour for his own projects, viewing the situation as something that was ultimately let pass without significant involvement.
