Adrienne Warren, a Tony Award winner, will lead the cast of "Imitation of Life," the inaugural musical composed by John Legend. This Off-Broadway production, based on Fannie Hurst's 1933 novel, delves into complex themes of race, motherhood, and self-identity.
The limited engagement is scheduled to run for six weeks at The Griffin Theater, commencing with previews on November 21 and officially opening on December 3. Warren, celebrated for her role in "Tina: The Tina Turner Musical," described developing the character of Delilah as a career highlight.
"Imitation of Life" centers on two single mothers and their daughters in the 1920s and '30s. The narrative follows Delilah, a Black housekeeper whose relationship with her daughter is strained when the daughter chooses to pass as white. The novel was previously adapted into films in 1934 and 1959.
Legend expressed his excitement for Warren to embody Delilah, praising her "heart, humanity and radiance." He noted that audiences will hear her "magnificent voice" in this groundbreaking composition for him. This project aligns with Legend's recent announcement to portray Harry Belafonte in an upcoming film.
