Filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan has voiced strong opinions against the dominance of OTT platforms, asserting that cinema is fundamentally meant for the theatrical experience. Speaking at the India Today Conclave South in Kochi, he shared his perspective on filmmaking's purpose and the audience's role.
Gopalakrishnan, who is returning to filmmaking after a 10-year hiatus with his upcoming movie 'Padayaatra,' revealed that the widespread adoption of OTT during the Covid-19 pandemic led him to question the utility of making films.
He reiterated his belief that films should be viewed in darkened auditoriums with proper acoustics, offering a distinct experience from smaller screens. While acknowledging that his films can appear on streaming services after their theatrical runs to generate revenue, he maintains that the primary intention for creation remains the cinema hall.
This latest film marks the fourth collaboration between Adoor and actor Mammootty, who he noted is the only actor he has repeatedly cast. Gopalakrishnan also commented on film budgets, describing excessive spending as "criminal" and emphasizing his commitment to making films within proper, justified budgets without compromising on quality.
