Filmmaker Aditya Dhar, acclaimed for 'Dhurandhar: The Revenge', has been approached by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to direct a biopic on the renowned Ahom commander Lachit Borphukan. The proposed Hindi film aims to introduce Borphukan's historic legacy to a global audience, following discussions that have begun between the Chief Minister and the director.
The Assam government is keen on a grand cinematic adaptation of Lachit Borphukan's life to promote his heroism internationally. Initial conversations with Dhar have been positive, with an expected visit to Assam in August for more detailed discussions. The government has affirmed its commitment to making the biopic, even if Dhar cannot direct it, by stating other directors will be considered.
This project is a key part of the Assam government's initiative to leverage cinema for showcasing the state's historical heritage, as announced in its 2026-27 Budget. Lachit Borphukan is celebrated for leading the Ahom forces to a decisive victory against the Mughal Empire in the 1671 Battle of Saraighat, preventing Mughal expansion. His leadership during the battle, despite illness, has made him an enduring symbol of patriotism in Assam, honored annually on Lachit Divas.
