Adam Thomas Battles Debilitating Autoimmune Disease

Adam Thomas has been confronting significant health challenges stemming from an autoimmune disease over the past two and a half years. This condition has resulted in daily pain, which he described as "pretty unbearable" and impacting his ability to walk. Previously, he found himself in intense pain due to arthritis, regretting stopping a medication that he felt offered better pain management than his current situation.

Currently, Adam is undergoing treatment with a new medication that is expected to take up to 12 weeks to become effective, and its success is not guaranteed. This leaves him seeking further pain relief options, having previously had steroid injections that only offered a week of respite. The difficulties he faces were highlighted during his time on I'm A Celebrity, where fellow contestant David Haye exhibited frustration over Adam's inability to participate in challenges due to his health.

Adam's condition is comparable to arthritis, a joint ailment characterized by pain, stiffness, and inflammation. An orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Tom Naylor, emphasized that conditions like CMCJ arthritis, affecting the thumb's base joint, can be particularly debilitating and interfere with daily activities due to cartilage wear and potential deformities.

Dr. Naylor explained that arthritis treatment typically follows a stepwise approach, addressing the ailment through lifestyle changes, physiotherapy, medication, and, in severe cases, surgery. However, he noted that there is no known cure for arthritis, underscoring the chronic nature of the condition.
