Actress and activist Q'orianka Kilcher filed a lawsuit in California on Tuesday, accusing filmmaker James Cameron of misappropriating her likeness. Kilcher alleges that Cameron extracted and replicated her facial features from a published photograph, using them as the basis for the character Neytiri in the Avatar film series.
The lawsuit asserts that Cameron exploited a young Indigenous girl's biometric identity and cultural heritage without compensation to create a massively successful film franchise. The first Avatar film grossed nearly $3 billion worldwide.
Kilcher reportedly met Cameron after the original Avatar's release and was shown an early sketch of Neytiri. Cameron's written note indicated Kilcher's "beauty was my early inspiration for Neytiri."
Kilcher discovered her likeness was used when a clip of Cameron surfaced online. In the clip, he stated, "So, this is actually her... her lower face. She had a very interesting face."
Kilcher, of Native Peruvian descent, expressed concerns about AI and identity protection. She stated, "in the age of A.I., our likeness is no longer safe... This case is about the future of identity."
