Peter Marinker, an 84-year-old actor, is preparing to star in a new production of Samuel Beckett's 'Krapp's Last Tape.' This iconic play, originally written for a 69-year-old character, explores themes of regret and isolation through an aging man revisiting past recordings.
Marinker, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease two years ago, sees his personal experience informing his portrayal of Krapp. He previously experienced 'dropouts' on stage while performing in 'The Lord of the Rings,' leading to an understudy taking over.
The production, suggested by the Cockpit's director Dave Wybrow, will feature Marinker using in-ear prompts if necessary. Wybrow noted that themes of misremembered and half-remembered events in Beckett's work gain new resonance when considering individuals with Alzheimer's.
Marinker's performance will also incorporate elements from his extensive career, including voice acting and his Irish accent inspired by his mother. He even penned his own poem, 'A Foggy Brain in London Town,' reflecting his experiences with memory.
