Acclaimed "Everything Everywhere" Directors Unveil $106M Sci-Fi Epic for 2027
15 Oct
Summary
- Oscar-winning directors Kwan and Scheinert sign deal with Universal
- Upcoming film has $106M budget and releases in November 2027
- Faces competition from Disney's "Frozen III" over Thanksgiving weekend

In a major move, Oscar-winning directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, known collectively as Daniels, have secured a release date and substantial budget for their upcoming sci-fi film. Universal has set the release for November 19, 2027, placing the untitled project in the pre-Thanksgiving weekend slot previously occupied by the "Wicked" films.
The Daniels' new film will have a budget of at least $106 million before tax incentives, based on data from the California Film Commission. This represents a significant investment from Universal, coming on the heels of the directors' critical and commercial success with "Everything Everywhere All at Once." That film, released in April 2022, went on to become A24's highest-grossing release ever, earning $77.1 million domestically and $142 million worldwide.
The Daniels' upcoming sci-fi venture will face stiff competition, as it is set to debut against Disney's highly anticipated "Frozen III." The previous two installments in the "Frozen" franchise have grossed a combined $2.72 billion globally, making it a formidable opponent. However, Universal is hoping the Daniels' film can build word-of-mouth in the weekend prior, much like "Wicked" did last year when it grossed $756 million despite opening against Disney's "Moana 2."
