The international trailer has been unveiled for "Guo Ran," the latest film from acclaimed Chinese director Li Dongmei. The film, which centers on a woman in her 30s navigating the emotional aftermath of pregnancy loss, is set to have its Asian premiere at the Pingyao International Film Festival on September 27.
Drawing from Dongmei's own personal experiences, "Guo Ran" follows the character of Yu, who begins "a new stage in her life as a newly pregnant mother with joy, expectation, and a bit of uneasiness" before facing the devastating reality when "the embryo stops developing and there's no fetal heartbeat anymore." The film has been praised by critics for its intimate and poignant portrayal of the emotional crisis, with Variety's Guy Lodge describing it as "a silently wrenching second feature from Chinese writer-director Li Dongmei that deftly identifies generational malaise in individual crisis."
Starring Li Manxuan and Wang Yitong, "Guo Ran" made its world premiere earlier this year in Rotterdam's Tiger Competition. The film is now set to compete in the Hidden Dragon section of the Pingyao International Film Festival, which runs until September 30 in Pingyao, Shanxi, China.
