In a move to find the next big TV music competition series, ABC is testing a new format called "Who's In The Band." The Disney-owned network has set a proof-of-concept taping for October 30th at Eastbrook Studios in London, with a star-studded judging panel.
Legendary music mogul Simon Cowell, who helped launch the careers of artists like One Direction, will serve as a judge alongside Joe Jonas, Spice Girl Mel B, and songwriter Savan Kotecha. The show will be hosted by Rei Ami, who provided the singing voice for the lead character in the Netflix series "KPop Demon Hunters."
The new format promises a twist on the well-trodden music competition genre, with singers performing the same song simultaneously in different colored tubes. This unique approach aims to add a fresh element to the tried-and-true singing competition format.
While the test shoot will not air on ABC, the network is believed to be planning the launch of a new talent competition series as soon as next summer. With veteran reality show "American Idol" returning in early 2026, ABC is clearly looking to expand its musical programming and find the next big breakout star.
