The African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) convened on Sunday at the Los Angeles Athletic Club to bestow special achievement honors upon several distinguished individuals. This year's recipients included Nikkole Denson-Randolph, Lorrie Bartlett, Michelle Satter, Nina Shaw, and Sony Pictures Classics co-founders Michael Barker and Tom Bernard.
Denson-Randolph, honored with the Spotlight award, has significantly impacted AMC Theatres' content strategy, notably with concert films like Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour. She emphasized that diversity and authenticity are not niche but powerful drivers of profitability and influence, stating, "Authenticity and diversity are not niche. They're powerful. They're often profitable. And they matter."
Michelle Satter received the Film Advocate Award for her four decades at the Sundance Institute, mentoring filmmakers and championing unique artistic voices. She believes film is a powerful medium for inspiration and healing, stating, "I've always believed in having artists tell stories that only they can tell with their unique voices."
Other honorees included Lorrie Bartlett for her work in DEI at CAA, and Michael Barker and Tom Bernard for their dedication to socially conscious storytelling through Sony Pictures Classics. Nina Shaw was recognized with the Legacy Award for her extensive legal career in the entertainment industry. The AAFCA, founded in 2003, focuses on films that showcase the Black experience and talent from the African diaspora.
