Pianist Min Kwon, inspired by a desire for connection amid global isolation, has curated a remarkable project titled "America/Beautiful." This ambitious undertaking features 76 distinct interpretations of the song "America the Beautiful." Kwon sought to create a musical counterpoint to destruction and fear, celebrating America's identity as a melting pot.
The project invited composers to reimagine the familiar tune, resulting in a diverse collection of 76 pieces. These interpretations encompass a spectrum of emotions and intentions, described by Kwon as "prayers, protests, dreams or confessions." The variety surprised even Kwon, with contributions ranging from minimalist composer Terry Riley's unexpected piano ragtime to Nico Muhly's gentle sonic landscapes and Tyson Davis's evocative "American Tableau."
These diverse compositions have been recorded by Kwon for a five-CD box set released in anticipation of America's 250th anniversary. The project has also been showcased through live performances, including a unique concert within the catacombs of Brooklyn's Green-Wood Cemetery. These events highlighted the multifaceted nature of the project, from ferocious interpretations to more intimate duets, aiming to leave a legacy of new work for future generations.
