Welsh comedian Mike Bubbins has found cult success with his sitcom "Mammoth," where he plays a 1970s PE teacher cryogenically frozen in 1979 and awakened in 2024. The show, which aired its first series in 2024 and is returning for another run, explores the humorous culture clash as the character grapples with modern society. Bubbins himself shares a deep affection for the 70s, evident in his enduring moustache and his home decor.

Bubbins's own journey into comedy began after a career as a PE teacher. A serendipitous workshop led him to stand-up, which in turn paved the way for "The Socially Distant Sports Bar" podcast. The inspiration for "Mammoth" stemmed from reminiscing about his own PE teachers, capturing their dated charm and anachronistic attitudes, which he then re-imagined through a time-travel premise.

Care was taken to ensure the sitcom addressed, rather than perpetuated, problematic aspects of the 70s. By making the main character's best friend Black and ensuring modern sensibilities regarding issues like sexism, the show aims for inclusivity. Bubbins, who grew up in Barry, Wales, also pushed for a show that, while Welsh in production, had broader international appeal, moving beyond typical Welsh stereotypes.
