A significant medieval manuscript, dating from approximately 1290 to 1310, is being offered for sale, providing a rare opportunity for institutions to acquire a piece of Arthurian history.
This richly illuminated tome, known as the Lebaudy manuscript, contains early versions of the Lancelot-Grail cycle, foundational myths of King Arthur, Merlin, and the holy grail. It features 126 miniature illustrations, including a unique depiction of Merlin as a talking stag and the Knights of the Round Table returning from battle.
For over 700 years, this manuscript remained in private collections, limiting scholarly study. Its estimated sale price is £1.5m to £2m. Experts note its text is unique among the known early copies of this cycle.
Attributed to the Master of the Liège Apocalypse, the manuscript showcases distinctive artistry with burnished gold leaf and characteristic figures. Its previous owners include a 15th-century knight and bibliophile Sir Thomas Phillipps. Scholars hope its potential public acquisition will allow for deeper research into its abridged and rewritten ending, which focuses more on Arthur's battles and kingship.
