City of London Police recently uncovered a major counterfeit vinyl record operation in Luton, seizing more than 6,000 fake records valued at approximately £260,000. This significant discovery marks the force's largest operation of its kind outside the capital and is the second-largest warrant executed by their dedicated unit.
The seized items included counterfeit music from globally recognized artists such as The Beatles, David Bowie, Queen, The Sex Pistols, and Taylor Swift. Police noted that criminals are exploiting the recent resurgence and increasing commercial value of vinyl records, which causes substantial losses for artists and the music industry.
This operation underscores the ongoing battle against intellectual property crime. The British Phonographic Industry (BPI), which collaborated with the police, reported a 13.3% growth in vinyl sales last year, reaching 7.6 million units. The BPI stated that these illicit gains often fund other criminal activities, emphasizing the broad impact of such counterfeiting on society.
