As the 2026 Oscars approach this weekend, several films nominated for prestigious awards are vying for attention. While 'One Battle After Another' and 'Sinners' are frontrunners, a selection of lesser-known, yet equally compelling, movies are also worthy of viewers' time. These hidden gems offer diverse cinematic experiences beyond the typical blockbusters.
Among the highlighted films is "Sentimental Value," a drama earning nine Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. Directed by Joachim Trier, it delves into complex relationships, avoiding simplistic portrayals and exploring characters' messy emotions with nuance.
Another notable mention is "The Secret Agent," starring Wagner Moura as a political dissident on the run. The film is praised for its gripping narrative and Moura's performance, alongside a strong supporting cast, earning a nomination for Best Casting.
Rounding out the unique selections is "The Ugly Stepsister," a horror reimagining of the Cinderella fairy tale. Directed by Emilie Blichfeldt, this film cleverly uses horror elements to comment on female body image and societal pressures, earning a nomination for Best Makeup.
