200-Year-Old Sword Emerges from Castle Lake
11 Aug
Summary
- A 200-year-old sword was found in a castle lake due to low water levels.
- The sword, potentially from the early 1800s, has a gilded hilt and curved blade.
- The discovery occurred amid drought conditions affecting much of England.

A remarkable archaeological find has emerged from a castle lake in England, revealing a 200-year-old sword. The weapon was discovered last Thursday when volunteers were clearing fallen branches around the lake's edge. Significantly lower water levels, caused by recent hot weather, exposed the blade sticking out of the water.
Curator Naomi Collick believes the sword could be a Victorian bandsman's sword from the early 1800s, noting its curved, rusted blade and gilded hilt featuring a lion. The exact origin and how it came to be in the lake remain uncertain, with theories including past owners, troops stationed there, or the original Stratfield family who lived at the castle in the 1800s.
This discovery coincides with widespread drought conditions across England. As of Tuesday, 71.3% of England was declared to be in drought, with Kent, East Sussex, Surrey, and West Sussex among the affected areas. The National Drought Group's declaration impacts 45 million people, with over 27 million facing water use restrictions. Drought conditions are expected to persist until significant rainfall occurs.
