A 1928 Rolls-Royce Sports Phantom, the 17EX, originally crafted as a racing car for the Maharaja of Kashmir, continues to make waves. This unique vehicle, now part of Yohan Poonawalla's collection, recently secured the best of show award at Japan's Concorso d'Elegance, held at the Yakushiji Temple in Nara. The 17EX's distinctive design and historical significance have also inspired Rolls-Royce's 'Project Nightingale'.
This exclusive coach-built collection, set to debut in 2028, will feature all-electric vehicles modeled after classic designs, with the 17EX serving as a primary inspiration. The original 17EX was personally developed by Sir Henry Royce to exceed 100 mph, featuring an aerodynamic aluminum body for racing. Its unique Saxe Blue color and boat-tail design underscore its status as a one-of-a-kind automotive masterpiece.
Acquired by Mr. Poonawalla in 2024, the 17EX has a rich ownership history, moving from Kashmir to the UK before its return to Indian ownership. It has since garnered accolades at various Concours d'Elegance events, including wins in Malta and Mallorca in 2024. Mr. Poonawalla describes the car as 'virtually priceless,' a sentiment echoed by its influence on modern Rolls-Royce electric car designs.
