An ancient 17th-century Lord's Prayer, composed in the Sinhala language and set to music by the Sri Lankan priest Fr Jacome Gonsalves, recently resonated at the Our Lady of Piety Church on Divar hilltop. The performance featured visiting Sri Lankan bishops, Joseph Vianney Fernando and Devasritha Valence Mendis, who offered attendees a unique spiritual experience.
Bishop Mendis, the present bishop of Candy, accompanied Bishop emeritus Fernando, who sang the prayer's lyrics, on the keyboard. This musical rendition, created over 300 years ago, was described as deeply prayerful and uplifting, transcending language barriers and fostering a moment of communion with God for the islanders and other attendees.
Fr Jacome Gonsalves, known as the 'Father of Catholic Literature' in Sri Lanka, was instrumental in reviving the faith there. He penned numerous works in various languages, showcasing his linguistic prowess. His musical composition of 'Our Father' has remained unmatched for centuries, demonstrating his remarkable foresight and artistic talent.
